I want to invite my family friend to visit me in Canada. Do I need to have an occasion at home or at a banquet hall?

Booking of banquet hall or having a special occasion are good if you have but it is not mandatory. It is up to you if you have resources to spend on organizing a family function that would be fine. It does not mean that you are guaranteed a temporary resident visa issuance.
