obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)
obstructive sleep is the most common sleep-related breathing disorder. People with obstructive sleep apnea repeatedly stop breathing and then start breathing again during sleep.
There are different types of sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the throat muscles relax and block the airway. This occurs intermittently during sleep. One sign of obstructive sleep apnea is snoring.
There are treatments for obstructive sleep apnea. One treatment involves the use of a device that uses positive airway pressure to keep the airway open during sleep. Another option is a mouthpiece to push the jaw forward during sleep. For some people, surgery may also be an option.
