Documents Required To Obtain Open Work Permit in Canada
-
It depends on what kind of work permit application you are applying for. If it is a post graduation work permit (PGWP), then you need to submit the documents demonstrating your completion of studies. If it is a LMIA based work permit, then you need to submit a positive LMIA approved, letter of job offer, job contract and other supporting documents. If the work permit is based on your spouse’s status in Canada, then you need to provide enough supporting documents which proves that your spouse has valid status in Canada. Along with the identification documents, financial documents, and employment establishment documents are also generally submitted.

There are different types of work permits you can apply depending upon your situation. Mainly there are two types of work permits – Open work permit and Employer Specific Work Permit (requires approved LMIA or the approved Job offer)
If you are a student studying in Canada and has successfully completed at least 8 months of study from a Designated Learning Institute (DLI) approved by the Provincial Government, you can apply for the Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP). If your spouse has an open work permit (e.g. post-graduation work permit), you must attach a copy of your spouse’s work permit to your application for an open work permit, along with:
- a letter from your spouse’s current employer that confirms they work there in a NOC 0, A or B occupation, or a copy of your spouse’s employment offer or contract, and
- a copy of your spouse’s recent payslips
- Your permit will not be valid longer than your spouse’s work permit.
If you have a spouse working in Canada on an open work permit, you can also apply for the open Work Permit.
